Abunai Sisters: Koko & Mika is a 2009 Japanese CGI short anime video series promoting the Japanese tabloid celebrities Kyoko and Mika Kano, starring the two red-headed sisters as secret agents. The show has had a notable online presence over the years, often regarded as one of the "worst animes ever" by many, and gained an ironic fandom around June 2023 following a resurgence of interest as people shared clips and created memes based on the show.

History

On January 15th, 2009, the anime series based on the Japanese celebrities, the Kano Sisters,[1] was broadcasted on AT-X and Fuji TV. The show follows the adventures of two sisters, Koko and Mika, after their parents passed away and the hardships they struggle to make ends meet. From bizarre monsters to magical artifacts, the duo tries to survive the dangers that await them (intro shown below).

Online Presence

The first episode of the show, titled "Abunai Beach," was uploaded to YouTube[2] by user @genomaru on July 23rd, 2016. The video (shown below) garnered over 97,000 views and 1,300 likes in seven years (shown below).

On June 28th, 2023, a clip of the anime was posted to Twitter[3] by user @camalilium, comparing the scene with the Bayonetta game franchise cutscenes. The post (shown below) garnered over 2.5 million views and 38,000 likes in a week.

The show has also been the subject of memes on TikTok. For example, on July 1st, 2023, user rosescarlate[4] posted the same clip (shown below, left) that went viral on Twitter, garnering over 4,200 plays and 530 likes in two days. On the same day, TikToker @siestaakabane[5] commented about the show in a list of the worst CGI animes. The post (shown below, right) garnered over 337,000 plays and 46,000 likes in two days.

Not that it would make it much better, but I assume we are missing context for some of the jokes or "jokes" to land. Since this is a comedy based on two Japanese celebrities that have had no relevance in the Western world, we are naturally not going to get some references to their antics, mannerisms, or drama that could be considered funny.

That being said, due to the sheer lack of information beyond that, I doubt the Japanese considered it very funny regardless.
