Tall Lady Shopping In Japanese Store refers to an image of a tall woman, purportedly Canadian volleyball player Sarah Pavan, standing at the cashout in a Japanese grocery store, looking significantly taller than the cashier standing in front of her. The image was posted to DeviantArt in 2018 and became the subject of redraws over the following years.

Origin

On November 11th, 2018, DeviantArt^[1] user zaratustraelsabio posted an image originally from warotanikki.com^[8] (now deleted) of a tall woman standing at the cash register of a Japanese grocery store, gaining over 14,000 views and 150 favorites in just over three years (shown below). While the original source of the image is unknown, it is thought to be a photo of Canadian volleyball player Sarah Pavan visiting Japan. The DeviantArt^[2] user previously posted an image of Pavan in Japan to the site in 2016. This was also discussed in the Know Your Meme^[3] forums.

Spread

On September 12th, 2021, Twitter^[4] user @etkunnn posted a redraw of the image seemingly taken from 4chan drawing Pavan as Mori Calliope, gaining over 16,400 likes and 2,000 retweets in seven months (shown below, left). On November 2nd, Redditor YextFE posted a side-by-side comparison of the original photo to a photo of a tall man in a Philippines Mcdonald's to r/blursedimages,^[5] gaining over 12,000 upvotes in five months (shown below, right).

On December 4th, Twitter^[6] user @Tobias_Wheller posted a redraw of the image with Pavan as Zero Suit Samus, gaining over 65,000 likes and 10,000 retweets in four months (shown below).

On April 16th, 2022, Tumblr^[7] user vizionsin posted a redraw of the photo where Pavan is Seto Kaiba from Yu-Gi-Oh! and the cashier is Yugi, gaining over 480 notes in nine days (shown below).
