About

The PlayStation Can Produce Mind-Boggling Effects refers to a photo from issue 61 of Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine (EGM) showing two simply animated skeletons from the PS1 era game King's Field overtop of the phrase, "The PlayStation can produce mind-boggling effects." The image became the subject of memes, including redraws and photoshops, throughout the 2020s for how perceivedly absurd it is to call the shown skeletons "mind-boggling" compared to modern day video game graphics. The phrase was written by video game producer Chris Johnston in 1994, when he worked at EGM.

Origin

In August 1994, issue 61 of EGM[1] was released. On page 61, the price of the then-upcoming PlayStation console is discussed in the "Press Play" section of the magazine. The article features an image of two animated skeletons from the game King's Field to represent what the PS1 is capable of graphically, captioned, "The PlayStation can produce mind-boggling effects" (shown below, left). On March 5th, 2020, X,[2] formerly Twitter, user @LostArkVG posted a close-up photo of the skeletons and the caption, garnering over 21,000 likes and 5,500 reposts in three years (shown below, right).

PRESS START SONY PLAYSTATION IN U.S. With many new systems coming out in the next few months, Sony may have a bumpy road ahead of them. A price for the U.S. PlayStation has not yet been announced, but the Japanese version of the system will not go for higher than about $480. If this price is the point at which the U.S. PlayStation will come in at, will Sony be able to become the leader? The 3D0 is an example of great hard- ware that is priced a bit too high for the con- sumer market. When the Sega CD was first intro- duced in the U.S., it had a rocky, but OK start because of its $299 price tag. Since that time, Sega dropped the price, added a different game, and the system has sold well. The PlayStation will be one of many new systems, which include Nintendo's Project Reality and Sega's Saturn, according to Sony, and their demon- strations prove that their machine is technologically advanced. The games that they have planned in Japan, how- ever, would not find the popularity in the U.S. that they would there. The PlayStation can produce mind-boggling effects. Capcom has announced a fighting game in Japan, and Namco has Ridge Racer and Cyber Sled, which will attract arcade gamers. Are arcade gamers going to give up the quarter- crunching versions for armchair ones? The feel of the arcade Ridge Racer is a unique one. It has to be brought home in a way that will satisfy the arcade gamer. The PlayStation is a double speed CD-ROM system. CD-ROM, up until this point, has not been as fast in the access department as cartridge systems. 56 Electronic Gaming Monthly Sony has stated that the access time will be close to zero, as if you're play- ing it on cartridge. Will third parties make the games that spell success for a new system? The 3DO has a lot of third parties but those third parties have not all made games for the system. Sony said that yes, there will be many third parties making lots of games for the PlayStation. Can the controller go diagonally? While this isn't a really big question, it is still one that many may be ponder- ing. Shooters and action games demand a controller that can move in eight directions. It's up to the consumer to make this system a hit. Sony has provided the gamer with superior hardware, and the games from Japan look very impres- sive. The demos that they showed also looked very good. When you've seen this system per- form, as with the dinosaur demo and the character that looks straight out of a Japanese RPG, you will see that this t could possibly be the next really big gaming platform. Since Sony is waiting for a good amount of Japanese arcade transla- tions to be ready by the time of the U.S. launch, there is almost no doubt that at least more than a handful for great titles will be ready and waiting for you to step up and play.. When Sony announces the third parties, and when The system itself looks plain for a powerhouse. games are playable, gamers are going to make a choice. Sony is hoping you'll choose the Playstation. With the graphics that they showed in their demos, it looks as if the Playstation will be a major con- tender. Now, what will you decide? +801 300 Come see a 3DD Demo. WEST July 23rd Babbage'a.
