xQc Wow Clap or xQc clap is an ear rape clip featuring Twitch streamer xQc who shouts "Wow" and proceeds to clap slowly. The video is often used as a reaction clip to mock fans or depict enthusiasm in a sarcastic manner.

Origin

It is unknown when the livestream from which the video originated took place. On March 27th, 2020, YouTuber SubjectGaming[1] uploaded the earliest available version of the clip, which got over 200,000 views in less than year.

Spread

On May 14th, YouTube user RaffisBoss2[2] uploaded a greenscreen edit of the clip (shown below, left), which gained over 44,000 views in less than a year. On July 17th, Instagram user animeorigin.italia[3] posted an edit of the Congratulations! scene from the movie The End of Evangelion replacing every character who clapped for Shinji with the xQc clip (shown below, right). The post was viewed over 17,000 times as of April 2021.

Also in mid-2020, a sped up version of the video began circulating on the internet. On July 5th, Instagram user inhalemywasps[4] posted the earliest known instance of the edit and got over 37,000 views as of April 2021. On July 27th, a slightly longer version was posted on YouTube by user Buburito,[5] and gathered over 340,000 views in the same time period (shown below).

Reaction Video

The clip saw further spread on iFunny in the form of Fandom Generalization memes. On August 17th, user gah_[6] posted the first instance of the format with the caption "Chungist when he sees that have posted yet another floppa twerk meme" (shown below, left), in reference to another user on iFunny. On October 19th, user BlissXD[7] posted a meme about Super Smash Bros fans using a much-distorted version of the clip (shown below, center). On December 15th, user Skrrt_Cobain[8] posted another one saying "DBZ fans when goku screams, turn a different color and beats his enemy" (shown below, right), which got over 41,100 smiles and over 2,100 comments in less than 4 months.
