About

Yes, You All Are Wrong refers to an exploitable cartoon of a man standing in front of a large crowd telling them that they're all wrong. The man and the crowd are both typically object labeled by meme creators. The template comes from atheist Facebook groups in early 2012. It became a notable ironic meme format on Twitter and Instagram in early 2022.

Origin

On April 6th, 2012, the Facebook[1] page Religion Poisons Everything posted a cartoon of a man standing in front of a large crowd of people, saying, "There is no God!" to them. The top text of the meme read, "Despite the fact that the majority rules, does not mean the majority is right. It only means that the majority is gullible." Over the course of 10 years, the post received over 700 reactions (shown below).

Despite the fact that the majority rules, does not mean the majority is right. It only means the majority is gullible. There is no god!

Spread

On March 6th, 2013, the cartoon was posted to Imgur,[2] earning 10 likes in nine years. It was reposted to Facebook multiple times between 2012 and 2018, however, it wasn't until 2019 that a version of the cartoon started to read, "Yes, you all are Wrong," instead of, "There is no God!" On December 12th, 2019, the Facebook[3] page Art, My Prison was the first known site online to post this version of the cartoon, earning over 180 reactions in two and a half years (shown below, left). On December 19th, 2019, Instagram[4] user sudharsananganapathy shared a cropped version of the cartoon, earning over 170 likes in the same amount of time (shown below, right).

Going into 2020, the template started to be remixed by Instagram astrology pages. For instance, on December 16th, 2020, the Facebook[4] page United 4 Truth posted a version that had "Me" written next to the lone man, earning over 650 reactions in two years (shown below, left). On December 17th, 2020, the Facebook[5] page Inappropriate Astrology posted a version writing, "Aquarius" next to the lone man, earning over 550 reactions in the same amount of time (shown below, right).

Going into 2021 and 2022, the template started to receive more elaborate remixes. For instance, on April 1st, 2022, the Tumblr[6] account wherelibertydwells posted a version that added in a standing Pepe The Frog, earning over 580 notes in one month (shown below).

I hate memes like this for this very reason, they don't promote individualism, they promote contrarianism. Instead of saying "You MAY be in the right DESPITE being in the minority", they say "You ARE in the right BECAUSE you are in the minority". Everyone wants to be the enlightened underdog.

"Despite the fact that the majority rules, does not mean the majority is right. It only means that the majority is gullible."

Due to the second sentence, this line is invalid. A majority can be right or wrong, as can a minority. Similarly both can hold positions which might be right or wrong to various degrees, especially on questions which are a matter of a conflict of interests in which viewing one side as being in the right and another as being in the wrong is harmful and the appropriate response is to hammer out a deal.

The blanket statement "The majority is gullible" is unhelpful. Especially since a minority might be manipulated by it's own internal leaders and be susceptible to targeted appeals.
