About
Your Neighbor at 3AM refers to a series of exploitable memes that are a sub-type of the Wojak Trying To Sleep format. The meme is similar in that a Wojak is attempting to get some rest, typically around 3 a.m., but is kept up by their neighbor playing loud music or video games, sometimes involving lights and other festivities. Whereas the previous meme required a Boomer Wojak, this variant requires the sleeper, allowing for more creativity in what is keeping him awake.
Origin
The earliest recorded usage of this meme is from the video uploaded by YouTuber[1] -Lexxy- on August 26th, 2019, titled "It's 3AM and Your Neighbor Is Listening To Megalovania" that features Sans from Undertale peeking from behind the edge while a low volume version of Megalovania plays in the background (shown below).
Spread
In the following months, more versions of the meme were posted to YouTube, with some having more variation than others. A prime example of variants that continued using Wojak is the video by YouTuber[2] Micky D, who uploaded it on April 27th, 2021, receiving 260,000 views and 25,000 likes in three weeks (shown below).
Other similar examples started to pop up as it spread, only these versions took inspiration from the Nostalgic ASMR trend. While still having to do with the neighbor at 3 a.m., these newer meme examples forewent the Wojak, instead either having other visuals accompany the slightly distorted music or completely imagining how the room and scene would look as the sound is coming in.
This creative culmination can be best seen in the YouTube[3] video uploaded by Lizadking on August 11th, 2020, titled "POV: Watching Toonami at 3AM but your neighbor is a Fox main," which shows a fully rendered room complete with a television playing a promo from Toonami while the sounds of Super Smash Bros: Melee can be heard in the background (shown below).
