Modakawa Backless Chain Dress is a redraw art trend in which artists draw characters wearing a backless chain dress sold by Modakawa. The trend started on X / Twitter in March 2024 after a user posted an image of the dress on a mannequin, writing, "which char should I draw wearing this?"

Origin

On their website, fashion retailer Modakawa^[1] has a black backless dress adorned with gold chains listed on its website as "Sexy Halter Hollow Out Backless Chain Fishtail Lingerie Dress⁠." The dress is also featured on the company's TikTok^[2] page, @modakawaofficial, in different angles and colors (shown below).

On March 6th, 2024, X^[3] user MissAmethysa made a post asking, "Which char should I draw wearing this? 👀" sharing a picture of the dress at various angles (shown below). The post received over 71,000 likes and over 10,000 reposts in over two weeks.

Spread

Over the following weeks, the majority of the quote-reposts were dominated by artists depicting various characters wearing the dress. For example, on March 17th, 2024, X^[4] user @Redpostit101 posted a piece of artwork depicting Nami from One Piece in the dress, garnering over 5,300 likes in a week (shown below, left).

On March 21st, X^[5] user @uve_99 posted a piece of art depicting VTuber Nerissa Ravencroft wearing the dress, garnering over 6,500 likes in four days (shown below, right).

On the same day, X^[6] user @Revvie_Art posted a piece of art depicting Nia from Xenoblade Chronicles in the dress, garnering over 4,300 likes in four days (shown below). The meme also spread to Tumblr,^[7][8] with several examples of the trend being uploaded to the site on March 24th.
