About
Blanky Mode, alternatively spelled Blankie Mode, refers to a series of memes, including image macros, photoshops and video edits, in which various characters are shown wrapped up in cozy blankets, often alongside a variation of the text, "going blanky mode." The meme began as an offshoot of the He Will Never Have A Girlfriend format.
Origin
On February 27th, 2019, Twitter[1] user @AFluffyDog shared a now-deleted tweet by @ivy_hollivana. Although the image is now deleted, a comment by Twitter[2] user @DatDaisy that day reading, "waaaa I wanna blanky mode a pig," suggests this may be the original blanky mode post.
As further evidence, on February 28th, a "He Will Never Have A Girlfriend" meme showing a piglet in panel one and a piglet in a blanket in panel two, reading, "he will never go blanky mode," was uploaded to ME.ME,[3] offering the earliest live upload of the meme (shown below).
On March 1st, the meme was shared to /rcomedyheaven[4] by Redditor u/TAKA_BELL.

"Blanky mode" inspired numerous memes over the course of 2019, many starting as variations of the "he will never go blanky mode" meme. For example, on March 14th, Instagram[5] page @beepbeepleaf uploaded a meme showing a hotdog become a pig in a blanket (shown below, left). On March 17th, Instagram[6] meme page @fakeyeezyboosts uploaded a version of the meme with a cat, garnering over 4,600 likes in two years (shown below, right).
On the same day, Instagram[7] page @aborteddreams used the phrase "go blanky mode" in a separate meme format, garnering over 1,500 likes in two years (shown below).
On June 19th, Redditor u/hollowbeats posted a version of the meme to /r/playboicarti[8] (shown below, left). On September 27th, Redditor u/Pizza_Puppy posted a new version to /r/kanye[9] (shown below, right).
On August 13th, 2020, YouTuber[10] pain posted a meme originally from the now-deleted Instagram page arbychief.exe in which Master Chief from the Halo video game franchise goes blanky mode, garnering over 18,000 views in eight months (shown below, left). On September 14th, YouTuber[11] LegoGuy 1010-1 uploaded a voiced over meme of JFK from Clone High going blanky mode, a reupload from an unknown source, garnering over 6,700 views in seven months (shown below, right).
On October 17th, Twitter[12] user @okidokidev posted a frame of Princess Zelda wrapped in a blanket from Zelda CD-i next to an original piece of art depicting the scene, writing, "warmup of zelda going blankie mode based on a very good frame from wand of gamelon," garnering over 2,500 likes and 650 retweets in six months (shown below, original left).
On April 23rd. 2021, Twitter[13] user @UltimaShadowX posted a Hello Yoshi From Super Mario meme featuring CD-i Zelda going blankie mode, garnering over 7,400 likes and 1,100 retweets in six days (shown below).
