Explaining My Camera Roll is a participatory TikTok trend that involves the user explaining selected photos in their camera rolls, most often their most recent photos. It started in early 2022 but surfaced again en masse in September 2022 amid the trending hashtag "#explainingmycameraroll" and using Future's song "Solo."

Origin

On March 11th, 2022, TikToker[1] hotsinglefunnyblackgirl uploaded the first-known "Explaining My Camera Roll" video on the platform, using a nightcore remix of the Tyler, The Creator song "Darling Darling." Over the course of six months, the video received roughly 1.4 million plays and 345,100 likes (shown below).

Spread

Soon after the virality of hotsinglefunnyblackgirl's video, the trend gained iterations from multiple TikTokers in the weeks that followed. For instance, on March 12th, 2022, TikToker[2] olliiviiiaaa posted a video that followed hotsinglefunnyblackgirl's example, gaining roughly 74,000 likes in six months (shown below, left). On March 18th, 2022, TikToker[3] anna..paull also followed the format, gaining roughly 5.8 million plays and 1.3 million likes in six months (shown below, right).

The trend resurfaced in September 2022 using a sped-up remix of Future's song "Solo." On September 21st, 2022, TikToker[4] iwasmadeinspace used the sound to show her trip to Trinidad and Tobago, gaining roughly 354,900 plays and 41,100 likes in five days (shown below, left). On September 24th, 2022, TikToker[5] sharonwm posted a video in which she stated that she wanted to participate in the trend but that her camera roll was filled with random screenshots instead of aesthetic photos. Her TikTok received roughly 19,800 likes in two days (shown below, right).
