Great Gatsby Reaction or Leonardo DiCaprio Toast refers to a series of reaction images and GIFs featuring actor Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby toasting a martini glass from the 2013 film The Great Gatsby. Typically the reaction is used to show agreement or praise for something, but it is also used as an image macro in memes.

Origin

The Great Gatsby reaction image comes from a moment in the 2013 film The Great Gatsby. While the film was released on May 1st, 2013, the first known iteration of the image online can be found in the second theatrical trailer for the film, which was released on December 20th, 2012. At 43 seconds into the trailer (shown below), Gatsby raises his glass to the camera.

Following the release of the Fergie song “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got),”^[1] Tumblr users began using the image of Gatsby toasting in images and GIFs. On May 13th, 2013 Tumblr user boosted-minkica^[3] posted a series of gifs (shown below) featuring the image of Gatsby toasting.

The day, Tumblr user hawkeyedriza^[7] responded to a post stating that "you can’t repeat the past" with the image of Gatsby toasting and the line "of course you can." The post (shown below), which was followed by the line "whispers old sport" by user catherine-is-a-lemon, received more than 1 million notes.

On May 24th, the website The Meta Picture posted an image macro (shown below) of Gatsby toasting and the words “A little party never killed nobody.” Over the next few weeks, Tumblr users began posting the image as well.

On June 17th, BuzzFeed^[5] published a ranking of “The Top 3 Times Leonardo DiCaprio Raised His Glass.” The scene from Gatsby came in at number two.

On July 16th, the website Meme Generator posted the image (examples below), which allowed users to create image macros using the Gatsby toasting picture.^[6]
