Sus Sex is a play on the English county name "Sussex" that separates it into the words "sus," meaning "suspicious" (popularized by Among Us), and "sex." Memes intentionally separating the name started to become widespread in late 2020 in shitposts including image macros teasing Sussex for its name, similar to the MFs Really Named This series of memes.

Origin

On December 27th, 2020, Redditor manlethamlet posted a meme to /r/okbuddyretard^[1] consisting of a screenshot from the Sussex, England Wikipedia page showing a map of Sussex captioned "WTF SEX IS SUS??" gaining over 415 upvotes in just under a year (shown below). This is the earliest known meme separating the word "Sussex" into "sus sex."

Spread

The joke spread over the course of 2021 as people created similar memes separating the name and expressing ironic shock over it. On January 3rd, 2021, Instagram^[2] user yourlordandsaviormonke posted a map of Sussex captioned "WTF SEX IS SUS," gaining over 7,500 likes in 11 months (shown below).

On April 18th, Instagram^[3] user non_haeretici_coalition posted a map with the caption "sus sex? You mean like Bill Cosby?" referencing the Bill Cosby rape allegations, gaining over 1,500 likes in seven months (shown below).
