About

The Forest Question, also known as the Forest Personality Test, is a series of hypothetical questions that one asks their partner to subconsciously gauge how strong their relationship is. It's similar to the Strawberry Question that predates it. With the Forest Question, one has to close their eyes and say the first two animals they see in a forest, followed by another question about a hut and another about a jug filled with water. The trend went viral with boyfriends and girlfriends on TikTok in mid-2022, inspiring other couples to try it on each other. It's said to originate from a book called Kokology: the Game of Self-Discovery.

Origin

Website Bustle[1] published an article on June 15th, 2016, about the Forest Personality Test that's a precursor version of the Forest Question, however, it is a relational psychology test rather than a test for couples. Bustle wrote that the origin of the Forest Personality Test was unknown, however, they stated that it's similar enough to "The Cube"[2] test from the Kokology book series to be a variant of it.

The Forest Question test wasn't officially outlined until July 20th, 2022, when TikToker[3] julieandcorey posted a video where she had a text conversation with her husband, asking him three questions that made up the Forest Question quiz. In the TikTok's description, she stated that it came from the same Kokology book that has the Strawberry Question (Kokology: the Game of Self-Discovery), specifically writing that it "has one like this so I had to try it." Her questions were as follows:

1. Time to visualize yourself in a forest, what's the first animal that you see? What's the second animal that you see?

2. Now, imagine there's a hut. Do you bypass it, knock before going in or crash in?

3. Now, you find a jug. How much water is in it: none, full or half full?

In her TikTok, her husband responded to all the questions with silly GIFs but ultimately failed the test. She revealed to him what his answers meant about their relationship coming from his subconscious:

1. The first animal represents the responder and the second animal represents the questioner.

2. The hut represents the relationship and how ready the responder is to be in it.

3. The amount of water in the jug represents how much love the responder feels is in the relationship.

In less than a day, julieandcorey's TikTok[3] received roughly 3.8 million plays and 535,300 likes (shown below).

Spread

Following julieandcorey's video, many TikTokers in relationships tried the Forest Question with their significant others. For instance, on July 21st, 2022, TikToker[4] jenniferpineda117 tried it with her fiancée, gaining roughly 3,500 plays in one day (shown below, left). Also on July 21st, TikToker[5] sarahgoodrich19 tried it with her boyfriend, gaining roughly 6,100 plays in the same amount of time (shown below, right).

The Strawberry Question

The Strawberry Question also known as the "Strawberry Test" or "Stolen Berries" refers to a personality test meant to reveal aspects of your sexuality, personality and relationships by way of a series of questions starting with whether or not you would steal a strawberry from a farmer's field if you were hungry, followed by asking the participant how tall of a fence they'd climb to take the strawberry, how many berries they'd eat, etc. The test originates from the Japanese personality test book Kokology: the Game of Self-Discovery. A variation of the test became popular on TikTok in early 2022 as a sort of prank where girlfriends ask their boyfriends the questions over text then spin the story to be about girls rather than strawberries, implying they're cheating.

On January 17th, 2022, TikToker cindy2_bae posted a video texting her boyfriend "the strawberry question," where she asks if he would take a strawberry if he was hungry and he refuses, "passing the test" in her eyes, gaining over 100,000 views in four days (shown below, left). On January 20th, TikToker julieandcorey (previously mentioned) posted a version of the test where she "catches him," gaining over 7 million views in a day (shown below, right).

The "Strawberry Test" at least actually makes sense conceptually as a personality test. It's all "what would you do?" questions.

This one is so bizarre. "How full is the jug?" Bitch, how would I know? It's not my jug. I didn't fill it up.
