"Uncle Dick in the Deer Stand" is a memorable phrase uttered by Democratic presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar during the democratic presidential primary debate on February 25th, 2020. The comment, made in response to a question about gun control and gun rights, went viral on Twitter on the evening of the debate.

Origin

On February 25th, 2020, at the democratic primary, Klobuchar explaining how she decides upon, said, "I look at these proposals and say do they hurt my uncle Dick in the deer stand? They do not" (clip below).[1]



Spread

Following the post, people online began mocking the comment. That day, MTV News shared an isolated clip of the moment. Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 88,000 views, 470 likes and 135 retweets (shown below).

Twitter[2] user @emilyfavreau mocked debate bingo games. They wrote, "take a shot if you had 'my uncle dick in the deer stand' on your bingo card." The post received more than 2,100 likes and 150 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below).

Throughout the evening, others began joking about the comment (examples below, left and right).

That day, Twitter[3] published an Events page on the phrase. Additioanlly, several media outlets covered the meme, including CBS,[4] Bloomberg,[5] Associated Press[6] and more. According to CBS, "Minnesota's senior senator has brought up her Uncle Dick at recent events in Iowa and New Hampshire and during a CNN town hall earlier this month, according to the Associated Press. She hasn't said much else about him."
