About
Understandable, Have a Nice Day, also known as Understandable, Have a Great Day or Understandable, Have a Good Day, refers to a catchphrase used in a series of image macros and reaction images in which one person asks for something, the other person denies it to them, and therefore, the initial person responds, "Understandable, have a nice day." The meme is most commonly associated with a deep-fried meme depicting former professional basketball player Shaquille O'Neal (Shaq) sitting in a car and throwing up a peace sign.
Origin
The first instance of Understandable, Have a Nice Day comes from a variation on the Whoppy Machine Broke meme. On February 26th, 2017, Twitter user @liltusk[8] posted a three-panel, deep-fried image macro (shown below), in which former basketball player Shaquille O'Neal drives up to a drive thru window and says, "Hello, food?" The drive-thru attendant responds, "Food broke." The final panel shows Shaq relaxing behind the wheel of his car with the text, "Understandable. Have a great day."
The tweet garnered over 440 likes, 20 replies and 90 retweets in five years.
While the initial post received minimal engagement on Twitter shortly after it was shared, two days later, on February 28th, 2017, Tumblr user Etica[1] shared the post and received more than 32,700 notes.
Spread
The Understandable, Have a Nice Day catchphrase and image macros spread over the following years, with meme creators using several variations of the phrase.
On April 7th, 2017, Filthy Frank shared the meme on his Instagram account, garnering more than 26,400 likes.[2]
On May 2nd, the Facebook account It was just a meme bro[3] posted a popular variation on "have a nice day," a conversation between a Facebook user and the group "Online Shopping." Essentially, the post (shown below) moved an interaction that would typically take place in person (browsing merchandise in a store) and moved it into an online chat window. The post received more than 7,500 reactions and 2,100 shares.
The following day, May 3rd, 2017, the Instagram account @hoodshiet[4] shared the image and received more than 12,300 likes.
Over the next few days, the two variations of the meme, both the three-panel and the chat window, were shared throughout the internet, with the common ending of "Understandable, have a nice day."[5][6][7]
