Your Crush / Her Father / Her Brother refers to a series of object-labeling memes arranged in a visual chart of several images with a caption under each, most often labeled "your crush," "her father," "her brother," "her ex," "her crush" and "you." The format is typically arranged as an image macro with six captions, each corresponding to a character with different pictures. Generally, the six images are related to each other, such as characters from the same game or TV series, but with the last “you” seeming the most out of place or undesirable.

Origin

The exact first instance of the image macro setup used in a meme is unknown, but the earliest examples date back to at least late 2014. For example, on November 6th, 2014, Instagram^[5] user realedumanzano posted the earliest known iteration of the format with five images of celebrities and a goofy-looking guy labeled "you" in the last frame, earning over 740 likes in roughly seven years (seen below).

Spread

The format using image captions of "your crush" and "her father" continued spreading over the following year, spreading to additional platforms and sites. On January 15th, 2015, Know Your Meme^[6] user oscar_gs posted another example depicting images of characters from Super Smash Bros, receiving over 8,000 views and 122 likes in roughly seven years (shown below).

Your Crush / Her Father memes spread across more fandoms in the following years, such as the Marvel fandom after a variant was posted on Imgflip^[1] in 2015 by user GeekyFool86 showing characters from The Avengers (seen below, left), receiving over 151,000 views and 11 upvotes in six years. Another version of the meme was posted to a Pinterest^[2] thread depicting several celebrities in the images on June 11th, 2016 (seen below, right).

On February 9th, 2017, comedy Facebook poster 9Gag shared a meme^[3] using the template, and by late 2017 compilations^[4] of the Your crush/Her father meme were featured on meme compilation sites like me.me. On April 5, 2019, an image generator for the meme was posted on imgflip. Most original spread seems to have been confined to Facebook, Pinterest, and specific fandom image boards which filled in the meme with characters from their respective fandoms. On April 5, 2019, an image generator for the meme was uploaded to Imgflip as well.
