About
Alcohol and Drug Abuse Lake refers to a real reservoir in Richland County, South Carolina. It was first mentioned on Twitter as early as November 2015 but received the most amount of attention in April 2021 across Twitter and Reddit where it was used as an exploitable image macro in memes.
Origin
On November 5th, 2015, verified Twitter[1] user @tomangell first shared information about the obscure body of water via a tweet. Angell, who is the chief editor of the website Marijuana Moment,[2] tweeted about Alcohol and Drug Abuse Lake multiple times throughout 2016.[3]
On July 6th, 2018, Angell tweeted[4] a link to an article[5] written on his website that talked about the origin of the lake's name, noting its proximity to a nearby drug and alcohol abuse treatment center. The tweet (shown below) received 27 likes in roughly three years.
It's also important to note that the article was inspired by a Reddit post about the lake posted to the subreddit /r/todayilearned [6] on February 7th, 2018.
Spread
Alcohol and Drug Abuse Lake received little attention online until April 2021. On April 23rd, 2021, Twitter[7] user @oksoumhi tweeted about the lake (shown below), receiving roughly 7,000 likes and 750 retweets in one week.
This tweet from @oksoumhi inspired various tweets, memes and Reddit posts about the lake in the following days and weeks. In the subreddit /r/fishingmemes,[8] for example, Redditor RajaThat posted about the lake on April 25th, 2021. On May 19th, 2021, the lake was shared in the subreddit /r/Wikipedia.[9] Many used catchphrases such as What If We Kissed In and Goodbye Mom! paired with the lake's likeness.
Alcohol and Drug Abuse Lake became most present on Twitter, Instagram and subreddits like /r/OKBuddyRetard in the following months.
