Overview

Travis Scott Fortnite Event refers to an in-game promotional concert in the video game Fortnite in which rapper Travis Scott premiered new music and a giant holographic version of him "performed" in the in-game world. The event was widely praised by players and reviewers due to its over-the-top nature, especially in comparison to other promotional events the game has held before. It set a Fortnite record, with over 12.3 million players attending the event.

Background

On April 20th, 2020, Epic Games[1] announced "ASTRONOMICAL," an interactive musical collaborative event between Fortnite and Travis Scott that would take place in the game's world. They announced five times the event would take place:

THURSDAY, APRIL 23, 2020 AT 7:00:00 PM EDT
FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 2020 AT 10:00:00 AM EDT
SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 2020 AT 12:00:00 AM EDT
SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 2020 AT 11:00:00 AM EDT
SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 2020 AT 6:00:00 PM EDT

Developments

On April 23rd, 2020, the first of the virtual shows took place. It featured a giant holographic Travis Scott "performing" songs and transporting players through an interactive space built into the game (shown below).

The event was widely praised by critics. The AV Club[2] compared the event favorably to other Fortnite crossover events, saying:

"Sure, it was kind of neat to watch Marshmello DJ a set, or to wander through the vast, uncharted wilderness of Weezer Island. But this is still a video game, right? Can’t it go a little bit nuts?… As it turns out: Fuck, absolutely, yes. Apparently the missing ingredient was rapper Travis Scott, who dropped by Pleasant Park this week to spread a little extravagant, gorgeous crazy around.

The Verge[4] also praised the concert, writing, "What I loved was that it was the kind of experience that could only exist in a virtual space like this. Yes, live concerts have become more elaborate, as anyone who has been to an IRL Travis Scott arena show can attest. But they don’t let you float through the air while a Godzilla-sized rapper walks across an ocean."

The event set a Fortnite record, with over 12.3 million concurrent players attending the first show.[3] Ninja posted a video of himself watching the event to YouTube, gaining over 720,000 views in less than 24 hours (shown below, left). SypherPK also posted such a video, gaining over 1.8 million views in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).
