Frye is a character set to debut in the 2022 video game Splatoon 3. According to a Nintendo Direct, she will be a member of the band "Deep Cut" and serve as one of the hosts for both the Anarchy Splatcast and regular Splatfests. After the character's debut during the Direct livestream in August 2022, her design divided fans of the series, as some fans expressed they liked it and created fan art for the character while others found her ugly, particularly taking issue with her large forehead.

Origin

On August 10th, 2022, Nintendo released a Direct presentation focused on Splatoon 3. The Direct introduced the "hosts" of the game: Deep Cut, a band consisting of manta ray Big Man and squids Shiver and Frye (shown below, top). Nintendo also tweeted images of all the Deep Cut members, including Frye, after the Direct (shown below, bottom).^[1]

Spread

While many on social media seemed pleased with Shiver and Big Man, the latter in particular,^[2] Frye seemed to divide Splatoon fans. Some were not fans of the character's design, poking fun at the character's large forehead. The day of her reveal on August 10th, 2022, Twitter user @DNCHI77^[3] mocked the character's design in a series of roasts (shown below, left and middle), with their first tweet gaining over 150 retweets and 1,600 likes in one day. User @sweatypalmsfgc^[4] also made a joke about the character's forehead, comparing her to Megamind, gaining over 500 retweets and 5,700 likes in one day (shown below, right).

Some people liked Frye's design, however, and quickly began posting fan art of the character. For example, on August 10th, Twitter user @Nebula_Cone^[5] posted art that gained over 820 retweets and 4,000 likes in one day (shown below, left). User @eeveebooyah^[6] tweeted art that gained over 200 retweets and 1,200 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
