Godzilla vs. Kong is a 2021 American monster film set in the Legendary's MonsterVerse. Prior to its release, the film was expected to resolve a long-lasting debate about which giant monster would prevail in battle: King Kong or Godzilla. This debate regained popularity in January 2021 following the release of the movie trailer, with Team Godzilla vs. Team Kong memes trending on iFunny and Twitter.

History

On October 14th, 2015, production company Legendary Pictures announced that Godzilla and King Kong will appear together in Godzilla vs. King Kong, a film within Legendary's MonsterVerse initially scheduled for release in 2020.[1]

In the 2019 film Godzilla: The King of Monsters, King Kong is mentioned and fleetingly shown on monitors.[2]

On January 21st, 2021, Legendary[3] revealed a new poster for the film and announcing the March 26th, 2021, release.

On January 24th, 2021, Warner Bros. Pictures released[4] the trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong. The trailer accumulated over 16.2 million views within 24 hours.



The film was released globally on March 24, 2021, followed by the United States release on March 31st.

Precursor

Prior to the 2021 film, both Godzilla and King Kong appeared in the 1962 Japanese kaiju film King Kong vs. Godzilla,[5] with King Kong emerging victorious.

Fandom

Team Godzilla vs. Team Kong

The release of the trailer was followed by the long-lasting debate about which monster would prevail over the other, Godzilla or King Kong, reigniting on Twitter, iFunny and other platforms. The debate had users splitting into Team Godzilla and Team Kong (example posts shown below) and insulting each other. On iFunny, the trend was supported by existing kaiju accounts[6][7][8] that participated in the Godzilla vs. King Kong and other kaiju-related debates since several years prior.
