About
Doorbell Chud, also known as Discord Mod Break In or Reddit Mod Break In, refers to a viral video of a man from Fairfield, California, named Jason Thomas Nichols, who broke into his neighbor's house in early April 2026 while identifying himself as Harry Dresden, the protagonist of the fantasy series The Dresden Files. The man, who many labeled a Discord moderator or Reddit mod due to his appearance (notably including a long black trench coat and flip flops), was later arrested after invading the home and getting into an altercation with the owner.
Video of the altercation was recorded on a Ring doorbell camera and other home security cameras, with clips and images of the footage quickly going viral soon after, leading to widespread discourse, edits and memes, particularly on X / Twitter, referencing the man and calling him a "Chud" due to his perceived resemblance to the Chudjak meme.
Origin
On April 7th, 2026, 29-year-old Jason Thomas Nichols arrives at the doorstep of one of his neighbors in Fairfield, California (near the San Francisco Bay area), claiming to be the character Harry Dresden of The Dresden Files while wearing flip-flops and a black pea coat.[8] The neighbor's Ring camera recorded the incident as Jason referred to his neighbor as "Victor" and asked where his daughter was. Some have speculated that Victor could be a reference to the character Victor Sells, who is the primary antagonist and "Shadowman" in the very first The Dresden Files novel, Storm Front.
After the neighbor refused to let him inside, Nichols attempts to kick in his neighbor's door, then rips the metal chain from a bell next to him with such force that it knocks the bell onto the ground. He then uses the chain from the bell to further attack his neighbor's door.
Nichols eventually managed to break into the home, entering it as he's seen on other security cameras inside the house, threatening the resident and getting into a scuffle with him. Later, footage shows Nichols being arrested by police responding to the scene.
Ring camera footage of the incident began to surface online within the next few days as it spread and garnered virality and media coverage online.
