Meme Police refers to fictional law enforcement officers empowered with the authority to impose restrictions on how internet memes are used online.
Origin
On February 10th, 2006, the website MemePolice Forums[1] were created for discussions about "examining and creating cultural memes."
Spread
On August 13th, 2013, a stock photo of a child dressed as a police officer captioned with "ur gettign (sic) a ticket sir / that meme wasn't dank enough" was posted to Facebook[4] (shown below). On October 1st, 2014, Redditor 369DAMNyoFINE reposted the image on /r/4chanMeta.[5]
On April 3rd, 2015, a montage of stock photographs featuring children dressed as police officers with the caption "You've been visited by Meme Police / No ticket today, but you better be careful" was submitted to FunnyJunk[7] (shown below). On July 12th, the image was reposted to /r/youdontsurf,[6] where it gathered more than 1,000 points (97% upvoted).
On October 22nd, the Corrider YouTube channel uploaded a video titled "MEME POLICE (Warning: dank memes)," which gathered upwards of 1.6 million views and 1,300 comments within three years (shown below).
On May 18th, 2016, an emoji copypasta titled "🔫👮Meme Police🔫👮" was submitted to /r/emojipasta[2] by Redditor grahamcrackers75 (shown below).
