About

MODOK is the villain character who appears in the MCU movie Ant-Man: Quantumania, being portrayed by the actor Corey Stoll. This version of MODOK is often mocked because of the CGI used to create him, with the actor's head being stretched wide to fill in the space of the suit he wears, a departure from the character's usual appearance in other forms of media.

Origin

Within the MCU, this MODOK is the same character as Yellowjacket from the first Ant-Man film, who after having his helmet damaged before the infinite shrinking occurred, ended up in the Quantum Realm looking as he does. This MODOK is eventually found by Kang the Conqueror, and upgraded into being the Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing, with MODOK being the acronym. This character's reveal took place with the trailer uploaded to the official Marvel Entertainment YouTube[1] on January 9th, 2023, which gained over 23 million views in one month (shown below).

Spread

Initial memes about the character quickly came as a result of the trailer, with the post on January 10th, 2023 by the Twitter user @LuisGangMD[2] using a different model of MODOK with a swapped face to highlight how goofy it is to stretch a face across the body instead of making it form fitting (shown below).

With the release of early screenings of the movie on February 15th, more people began to see MODOK and take pictures of the screen or make memes to clown on his appearance. A common meme occurrence is to take the character Humpty-Dumpty or another Egg-themed meme and replace MODOK's face with theirs as an exaggeration of his body. This is best seen in the meme by Twitter user @ThatBlazeGuy01[3] on February 16th, 2023, which received 100,000 views in one day (shown below).
