The TikTok trend started in February 2025. The song was originally created in 2020. Doechii rereleased the song in 2025, on her album D1*.

Origin

On May 14th, 2020, Doechii posted a YouTube^[1] video called "Anxiety | COVEN MUSIC SESSION," which was a bedroom recording session for her future mixtape. The song "Anxiety" remixed Gotye's hit song "Somebody That I Used to Know." The original video gained over 5.1 million views in five years (shown below).

On March 4th, 2025, Doechii released her album D1* that included a rereleased version of "Anxiety."^[2]

Around the same time, viral use of "Anxiety" surfaced on TikTok. For instance, an early, viral example was an edit shared by TikToker^[3] @chaysversion on February 22nd, which showed a compilation of characters breaking the fourth wall, in line with the lyrics, "Somebody's watching me, it's my anxiety." Over 17 days, the video received roughly 2.3 million likes (shown below).

In the following weeks, many TikTokers used the "Anxiety" sound.^[4] For instance, on February 26th, 2025, TikToker^[5] @dapperdantake4 posted a video with his baby, using the sound, gaining over 1.2 million likes in 13 days (shown below).

On March 7th, TikToker^[6] @rupeekolawole used the sound, showing himself peeking over a bathroom stall and dancing to the song, gaining over 1.7 million likes in four days (shown below).

On March 6th, 2025, Doechii used the viral "Anxiety" sound on TikTok,^[7] seen lip dubbing it among a crowd of fans in Paris, France, receiving over 1.5 million likes in five days (shown below).

By March 11th, 2025, the trend's most used TikTok sound^[4] had received over 624,000 posts.
