About
Stsg is an acronym for the SatoSugu Fanfiction, which is a shipping fandom story centered around Jujutsu Kaisen anime characters Satoru Gojo and villain Suguru Getō. Fanfictions about the duo started to go viral on November 2020 on Archive of Our Own website, spreading to new media formats like fanarts, ironic memes and fancam videos on TikTok.
Origin
One of the earliest SatoSugu[1] mentions appeared on Archive of Our Own website on November 4th, 2020, by user zenins in a fanfiction titled "the stillness of remembering what you had." The story centers around the Jujutsu Kaisen anime characters Mehumi and Satoru Gojo. In the footnotes of the content, the author says "I wanna write next a gojo/getou fluff fic btw:) I keep writing itafushi for some reason despite satosugu being my fav ship."
A month later. more content about Satoru Gojo and villain Suguru Getō ship SatoSugu began to go viral on social media. For instance, on December 21st, 2020, Tumblr[2] user franeridart posted a fanart drawing of the characters as a romantic couple (shown below), which received over 1,868 likes in two years.
Spread
Over the years, the SatoSugu ship became a popular source for fanarts and ironic memes on social media. For example, on August 3rd, 2023, American fast-food company KFC tweeted[3] about the fanfiction story saying "Watching SatoSugu breakup was even harder from behind the register." The post (shown below) is related to a Jujutsu Kaisen scene from the second season episode 29, in which the at-the-time best friends Satoru Gojo and Suguru Getō parted ways in front of a Kentucky Fried Chicken store. The post garnered over 147,000 likes and 68,800 retweets in a week.
The popularity of the ship inspired fans to create the acronym using the character's name initials "stsg." For example, on August 9th, 2023, TikToker[4] @moonzhnghao brought a Jujutsu Kaisen manga to a Taylor Swift concert to sing about the "stsg breakup," as she added in an overlay caption on her video (shown below, left). The post received roughly 88,000 plays and 30,000 likes in a day. On July 8th, TikToker[5] @akiswench posted a stsg fancam (shown below, right) that received over 1.3 million plays and 309,000 likes in a month.
