About

Warhammer 40k: Darktide is a team-based shooter video game created and released by Fatshark, the developers behind the Vermintide series, set within the Warhammer 40k universe instead of the Fantasy setting. The game was released in late November 2022 and is often described as being similar to Left 4 Dead except with customizable classes. Darktide generated notable interest online before and after its launch as people referenced it in fan art, memes and other posts around the web.

History

On July 23rd, 2020, as part of a set of reveals for the Xbox consoles, the first teaser was released for the game, revealing the location and general atmosphere. The teaser trailer was added to YouTube following the event, posted by the official Fatshark YouTube[1] channel, where it went on to get over 2 million views in two years (shown below).

On November 30th, 2022, Darktide was officially released on PC systems, with Fatshark uploading a launch trailer to its official YouTube channel that day, receiving over 360,000 views, 17,000 likes and 2,500 comments in two days (shown below).

Reception

Immediately upon the teaser reveal in mid-2020, hype started to take shape within the franchise's fanbase. For example, on July 23rd, 2020, Redditor u/SheeptarTheSheepKing[2] uploaded a We Will Watch Your Career With Great Interest meme in reference to Darktide to the /r/Grimdank subreddit where it received over 2,300 upvotes in two years (shown below).

On launch day, Redditor ProteusRex[3] uploaded a We Have Food At Home meme involving a screenshot of the in-game models for the enemy type "Beast of Nurgle" compared to the tabletop models for it, showing the stark contrast in dark tone, and gaining over 6,500 upvotes in one day (shown below).
