Waking Up Gucci On My PJs refers to lyrics from the song "First Girlfriend" by Tydus" which features a young blonde boy singing and rapping about going to school and talking to his girl crush. The original music video was uploaded to YouTube in late 2019 by the channel Trav and Cor. In early 2023, the song became the subject of many memes and remixes on TikTok, where it was slowed down, sped up and used as the sound for many Goofy Ahh memes.

Origin

On November 23rd, 2019, the YouTube^[1] channel Trav and Cor uploaded the official music video for "TYDUS – First Girlfriend" which featured the blonde boy rapping about waking up in Gucci brand pajamas, going to school and talking to his crush who eventually becomes his first girlfriend. Over the course of three and a half years, the video gained roughly 43.5 million plays and 306,000 likes (shown below).

Despite the song's 2019 origin, Tydus' "First Girlfriend" didn't become an established meme trend until early 2023 when reposts of the music video's opening landed on TikTok. This started with a video uploaded on March 5th, 2023, by TikToker^[2] @darth_vaden1 who proclaimed in text overlay, "Yo this song is fire 🔥🔥," earning roughly 302,800 likes in 25 days (shown below).

Soon after @darth_vaden1's March 5th TikTok,^[2] the "First Girlfriend" video was used in memes en masse that inserted Tydus into various, video templates. For instance, on March 6th, 2023, TikToker^[3] @lowhits uploaded a Patrick Bateman Walking meme that imagined Bateman listening to the song in his AirPods, earning roughly 1.2 million plays and 82,900 likes in 24 days (shown below, left). On March 8th, 2023, TikToker^[4] @tydus_talbott_official posted a similar video to @darth_vaden1's TikTok,^[2] which received more engagement, earning roughly 9.5 million plays and 849,700 likes in three weeks (shown below, right).

Going into March 2023, more memes surfaced as well as remixes of the song which were eventually used as slideshow audios. For instance, on March 16th, 2023, TikToker^[5] @falsesoapgaming uploaded a slowed version of "First Girlfriend" that sped up during certain intervals. Over the course of two weeks, the video received roughly 2.9 million plays and 212,600 likes (shown below).

After the song's early March 2023 virality, the TikTok^[6] sound for Tydus' "First Girlfriend" gained over 20,500 videos using it.
