What Colorblind People See refers to a series of memes in which words which colorblind people are presented as not being able to recognize words representing colors, such as "red", "blue", etc., as if the names of colors acted as colors themselves.
Origin
On April 2nd, 2019, Instagram[1] user yungcultleader posted a screenshot of their tweet[2] showing and edited photograph of Red Lobster sign. In the photograph, captioned "what colorblind ppl see", the word "red" was erased. The post gained over 16,000 likes in ten days.
Spread
On April 6th, 2019, Redditor jchang2080 posted a screenshot of the image, along with two comments not recognizing the joke, to /r/woooosh subreddit.[3] The post gained over 24,100 upvotes in six days. On the same day, Reddit user AplCake reposted the yungcultleader's meme to /r/memes subreddit,[4] gaining over 8,600 upvotes in six days.
On April 7th, 2019, Reddit user adib_ansr another variation of the meme to /r/dankmemes subreddit, where it received over 72,800 upvotes in six days.[5]
Following the post, multiple variations of the meme in which colorblind people were presented as not being able to recognize written words such as "red", "blue", etc., were posted on Reddit, primarily in /r/dankmemes subreddit.
