Lily Lu is a two panel image macro series featuring photographs of a chihuahua named Lily Lu. The series follows a before and after template in which a photograph the same dog looking angry and calm is captioned; similar to Me Before Seeing A Meme vs. Me After I Saw A Meme.

Origin

The earliest available photograph of the Lily Lu was posted on November 25th, 2015. That day, the Twitter ^[1] account @AnimalBabyPix tweeted the juxtaposed images of Lily Lu with the caption "when ur family is all roasting you at thanksgiving dinner an then ur grandma steps in and says to leave u alone." The post (shown below) received more than 4,000 retweets and 6,400 likes in two and half year.

While this is the first available example, it appears as though the image was originally posted by the now-defunct account @brooksalayna.^[2]

Spread

Three days later, on November 28th, 2015, Tumblr user SpecialMemeFresh captioned the photos "me before seeing a meme. grrr" and "me after i saw a meme. its good." The post (shown below, left0 obtained over 158,000 notes in two years.^[3]

On December 20th, Twitter^[4] user @eiFito posted an image of the dogs with a sash and tiara photoshopped on the dog's body, referencing Steve Harvey's Miss Universe 2015 gaffe. They captioned the post "Por si se lo perdieron, aquí un resumen de #MissUniverse2015" (translation: "In case you missed it, here's a summary of #MissUniverse2015"). The post (shown below, center) received more than 780 retweets and 475 likes in two years.

About two weeks later, Tumblr^[5] user fermontelongo posted a variation with the caption "Me before and after checking out at Sephora." The post (shown below, right) received more than 660 notes in about two years.

On May 25th, 2016, the two images were arranged vertically with a black outline and uploaded to memegenerator.net. ^[6]
