About
Miles "Tails" Prower, widely known as simply Tails, is a character from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. He is generally cast as Sonic's sidekick and best friend with the ability to fly thanks to his dual tails and a proclivity for technology. Online, he has been the subject of many pieces of fan art, which have themselves become memes, often due to their poor quality or cringeworthy nature.
History
Tails first appeared in the video game Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Game Gear, released October 16th, 1992.[1] Players could control Tails as a co-op character in the game, though he notably couldn't fly in this title (shown below).
In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, he was given his now-iconic power of flight.[2] He also had his own campaign in the game. Tails has since been a regular in every Sonic the Hedgehog game, where he's characterized by his loyalty to Sonic and sweet nature. He also appeared in numerous pieces of Sonic-related media, such as the Sonic the Hedgehog animated television series and the second Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
Related Memes
While there are few memes regarding the canonical appearances of the character, Tails has, like most Sonic characters, been the subject of copious amounts of fan art, several of which became infamous for their poor or cringeworthy quality.
Tails Gets Trolled
Tails Gets Trolled is a ongoing crossover webcomic series initially posted to DeviantArt by user Lazerbot.[1] Characters from Sonic the Hedgehog and other popular media like Super Mario Brothers and Looney Tunes appear in the comic. The story of the comic is centered around an ongoing war between Sonic character "Tails" and the other characters versus a mysterious band of trolls. While the comic was initially notorious for its poor spelling, grammar, and gratuitous violent imagery, it also gained a following due to its absurdist humor and engaging plot.
On October 10th, 2011, DeviantArt user Lazerbot uploaded the first page of "Tails Gets Trolled" (shown below, click to enlarge).
The comic rapidly gained infamy after it was discovered by Something Awful users.[2] On February 18th, 2012, a post about the comic was posted to the Something Awful forums by user Nunez. Users on the forum began to mock the comic due to its perceived poor quality, but later found an earnest appreciation for the series.
Bench Tails
Bench Tails is a drawing of Sonic the Hedgehog character Tails from an extremely pornographic fan art webcomic featuring Tails and two small animal children. The first image of the comic showing Tails on a bench has been used as a trolling forum weapon and later in photoshopped parodies as it became notorious.
Tails Doll
The Tails Doll is one of six unlockable characters in 1997's Sonic R first released for the Sega Saturn console, and later re-released on PC and as part of Sonic Gems Collection for the Nintendo GameCube in 2005. Often while playing as the Tails Doll, the song "Can You Feel the Sunshine?" plays over and over continuously, regardless of what race track one is playing on. In addition to the creepy soundtrack, the doll limply levitates through the tracks. This led the character to become an urban legend online, spawning creepypastas and horror-themed videos around it.
In Sonic R, the Tails Doll is unlockable by collecting five Sonic tokens in the Radical City course, finishing third, and beating the character in a race.
The character went on to inspire numerous creepypastas. The most famous, "The Tails Doll Curse," was created by Rebekah G. and features the doll abducting a child.
Tails WTF
Tails What The Fu- refers to a series of video edits based on a 2015 Sonic Adventure Let's Play video and subsequent animation recreating an aspect of it where Sonic says, "Tails, what the fu-" before the two characters transform into Sonic.exe and Tails.exe in a Friday Night Funkin' style as a song from the game's "Vs. Sonic.exe" FNF mod plays. The videos became popularized on YouTube around early March 2022.
