About

Oh My God I Almost Died, also known as OMG I Almost Died, refers to a scene from the Comedy Central show Workaholics in which the character Adam DeMamp (played by Adam DeVine) is on the ground screaming, "Oh my God, I almost died!" while Anders and Blake are consoling him because he almost died after falling out of a tree. The scene was first used in memes on Instagram and Facebook in 2020. It then became an exploitable greenscreen template on TikTok in early 2023 in videos that layered the trio over other image macro backgrounds and paired them with captions that posed a scenario in which being overdramatic was humorously unnecessary. Many used a CapCut template made by LC Editing to make the memes.

Origin

On July 24th, 2012, season 3, episode 9 of Workoholics titled "Ders Comes In Handy" aired on Comedy Central.[1] In one scene of the episode, Blake and Adam are in a tree outside Montez's house. Blake goes inside for a moment to speak with Ders, leaving Adam in the tree alone. Adam then fell out of the tree, almost dying due to a loose rope. Blake and Ders then rescued Adam and consoled him on the ground while he shouted, "Oh my God, I almost died!" The scene was uploaded to YouTube[2] on July 27th, 2012 by the Comedy Central channel, gaining roughly 1.9 million views and 17,000 likes in 11 years (shown below).

On August 15th, 2012, Redditor phillyfan1995 posted to the /r/workaholics[3] subreddit, attaching a screencap of the scene with Adam's quote, "I haven't even seen Beauty and the Beast in like seven years and that was my favorite movie!" The post gained over 580 upvotes in 11 years. The scene was talked about again in the /r/workaholics[4] subreddit in 2013, however, memetic usage of Adam saying, "Oh my God, I almost died!" didn't surface until 2020. The first discovered meme to use the scene was posted by the Facebook[5] page REDCON1 on August 2nd, 2020, making a joke about "leg day" and gaining roughly 11,000 views and over 160 reactions in three years (shown below).

Spread

Going into 2021, the scene gained memetic usage on Instagram. For instance, on May 31st, 2021, Instagram[6] user @drgrayfang posted a meme that made fun of an NBA player getting a water bottle thrown at him, earning roughly 56,000 likes in two years (shown below, left). On July 17th, 2021, Instagram[7] user @hard_aesthetics_ posted another "leg day" iteration, gaining roughly 2,700 likes in two years (shown below, right).

Starting in early 2023, the Workaholics meme was used en masse on TikTok. One of its earliest uses was posted on January 4th, 2023, by TikToker[8] @theheartofaderp, gaining roughly 93,300 plays and 2,400 likes in three months (shown below, left).
