About

Super Mario (also known as "Super Mario Brothers" or just Mario) [1] is a critically acclaimed video game franchise developed by Nintendo. The games typically feature Nintendo's mascot Mario and his brother Luigi as playable characters that venture through different areas in the fictional land known as the "Mushroom Kingdom."

History

Arcade Era

The character Mario made his debut in the 1981 side-scroller arcade game Donkey Kong, in which the protagonist "Jumpman" attempts to rescue a damsel in distress from a large gorilla named "Donkey Kong" (shown below, left). The game was designed by Shigeru Miyamoto,[4] who went on to work on several Super Mario releases. The Jumpman character was named “Mario” after Mario Segale, the owner of several warehouses once rented by Nintendo.

In 1982, Nintendo released a sequel titled "Donkey Kong Jr,"[5] in which the player controls a young gorilla attempting to rescue Donkey Kong from Mario by climbing vines and avoiding various traps (shown above, right). On June 1st, 1983, Nintendo released Mario Bros.,[6] another arcade game that featured Mario and his brother Luigi as Italian plumbers attempting to exterminate creatures emerging from pipes by jumping on their heads and kicking them.

Console Era

On September 13th, 1985, the game Super Mario Bros.[7] was released with the launch of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) 8-bit video game console. The game was one of the first console side-scrollers with a panning screen and featured 8 worlds with 4 levels in each. The main antagonist is Bowser,[8] a large snapping turtle with a spiked shell that can breathe fire and repeatedly kidnaps Mario's love interest, Princess Peach.[9] The game features power-ups such as a mushroom that increases Mario's size and allows him to take an extra hit without being killed and the fire-flower which gives Mario the ability to shoot fireballs. Mario has since made an appearance in over 200 video games.[13]

Spin-Offs

The sandbox game would allow players to edit and create their own levels for the original 8-bit Super Mario Bros. or the 3D Super Mario Brothers U.

Are we sure this was never discovered before..? It seems too simple to execute for nobody to have known about it before. Maybe some people knew it, but never felt like talking about it online due to assuming it was no big secret or revelation due to how simple it is..? I am willing to believe the giant bubble and buzzsaw were unknown, but really, did NO ONE slide through the ghost house stairs and eventually hit a Big Boo and kill it..? It seems really hard to believe.

In Sonic 3 & Knuckles, you can change the bonus stage you get from star posts if you use Hyper Sonic's Warp skill, but I assume this is common knowledge for Sonic fans, and it is only slightly easier to pull than Mario's slide, what with being invincible and stuff.
