About

Mario Golf is a game series created by Nintendo that falls under their larger Mario series. The game features the titular character Mario and his friends as they play golf, much like other sports-related entries such as Mario Tennis. The game series has seven installments, ranging from the Nintendo Entertainment System to the Nintendo Switch.

History

The first game in the Mario Golf series[1] was called NES Open Tournament Golf, and it released on June 14th, 1987, for the Family Computer Disk System. This game is considered the first in the franchise because it included Mario as a playable character and in Japan was called Mario Open Golf. The game series would officially be titled Mario Golf once the Nintendo 64 version[2] hit the shelves on June 30th, 1999.

After the initial Mario Golf game, there were several other ones to follow: the Japanese-only Mobile Golf, released on May 11th, 2001, for the Game Boy Color, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour,[3] released on July 29th, 2003, for the GameCube, Mario Golf: Advance Tour,[4] released on June 22nd, 2004, for the Game Boy Advance and the Virtual Console in 2014, Mario Golf: World Tour,[5] released on May 2nd, 2014, for the Nintendo 3DS, and the most recent Mario Golf: Super Rush,[6] released on June 25th, 2021, for the Nintendo Switch. The trailer for Mario Golf: Super Rush was posted on May 17th, 2021, on YouTube[7] where it acquired 260,000 views in three hours (shown below).

Online Presence

Because of the regular game releases and adoration of Mario, the series itself has enjoyed a continual online presence across many platforms and sites. On Reddit, this can be seen in the /r/MarioGolf[8] subreddit that was first created on November 14th, 2012. The subreddit has 645 members and regular updates after eight years. The majority of memes from Mario Golf games come from the Nintendo 3DS title Mario Golf: World Tour where the meme You Won This Hole comes from.

You Won This Hole

You Won This Hole is series of image macros that use a screenshot of the victor animations from the video game Mario Golf: World Tour in which characters such as Waluigi and Daisy are shown smiling over the subtitle "you won this hole." Online, people use the expression as a sexually explicit joke.
