The image was created by X user @JohnnyNeff_ on April 1st, 2023, with the earliest instance of the caption being added to the image being shared by @korysverse on April 4th, 2023. In subsequent months, the catchphrase and image became the subject of meme edits and redraws online.

Origin

On April 1st, 2023, X^[1] user @JohnnyNeff_ posted an edit showing Meg from the animated sitcom Family Guy edited to look like Ghostface from the horror movie series Scream. The image gathered over 7,000 likes in a year (seen below).

April 4th, 2023 is the earliest known record of a screenshot with the line "they faces killing me why nobody gaf," posted by X^[2] user @korysverse, gathering over 45,000 likes alongside the caption, "the scream 6 reveal."

Various internet users posted redraws of the meme on July 29th, including Tumblr^[3] user @0clownfish0, who gathered over 700 notes in ten months (seen below, left), and X^[4] user @cerealwumps, who gathered over 15,000 likes in ten months (seen below, right).
