Would You Guys Still Like Me If I Became Emo? is a catchphrase used in an image macro showing a sad emo anime girl holding her knees captioned, "Would you guys still like me if I became emo? U probably wouldn't. Whatever. Just forget it." The meme, based on a drawing posted to DeviantArt in 2012, became the subject of recaption edits over the following years. The caption is also attached to similar images for comedic effect.
Origin
On December 12th, 2012, DeviantArt[1] user zola159 posted an anime drawing titled "lonely forever" showing a purple-haired anime girl with a tail and ears holding her knees up to her chest and looking sad (shown below).
On October 13th, 2019, Twitter[2] user @RILEYtheband posted the image with a caption, "Would you guys still like me if I became emo?β¦β¦β¦β¦u probably wouldn'tβ¦.whateverβ¦just forget itβ¦," gaining over 1,000 likes and 520 retweets in three years (shown below). This is the earliest known version of the image with the caption. It was also reposted by Twitter[3] user @dynamisflow that day, gaining over 500 likes in the same span of time.
Spread
The meme received viral spread over the following years, inspiring new memes using the same phrase. On February 9th, 2020, Redditor ccaree posted a meme to /r/yourturntodie[4] using the phrase over a character from the game Your Turn To Die, gaining over 140 upvotes in two years. On August 3rd, Tumblr[5] user velvetys posted a version of the original meme altering the caption, replacing "became emo" to "said hi," gaining over 9,400 notes in two years (shown below).
On December 12th, iFunny[6] user Succz__2018 posted an image macro using the caption over an image of the Spy from Team Fortress 2 striking a similar pose, gaining over 20 smiles in two years (shown below, left). On January 28th, 2021, Instagram[7] user catboyowners posted a selfie image of @deadboyy00 using the phrase, gaining over 58,000 likes in a year (shown below, right).
On February 8th, iFunny[8] user Acephalist posted a meme using the caption over an image from Berserk, gaining over 60 smiles in a year. It was reposted to Instagram[9] by scenequeenmememachine on April 1st, gaining over 8,700 likes in a similar span of time. On May 5th, 2022, Instagram[10] page grandmas.butt posted a version of the original meme with an altered caption about being a single-celled organism in the sea, gaining over 32,000 likes in a day (shown below).
