Mild Bobby Sauce is a reaction image and exploitable screenshot of a bottle of sauce from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "The Krusty Sponge" that looks like SpongeBob and is labeled "Mild Bobby Sauce." The episode aired in July 2007 and first became the subject of memes in 2013, becoming increasingly popularized in shitposting over the following years. The meme saw a boost in virality on TikTok in June 2023 after a video in which an AI SpongeBob voice says "Mild Bobby Song" went viral, inspiring remixes and further memes using the image and audio clip.

Origin

On July 24th, 2007, SpongeBob SquarePants season five episode 89a aired in which Mr. Krabs themes the restaurant around SpongeBob after a critic praises SpongeBob's work ethic.^[1] In one scene, Mr. Krabs opens packages of new SpongeBob-themed sauces called "Tangy Sponge Sauce" and "Mild Bobby Sauce" (shown below).

The earliest known meme to use the image of Mild Bobby Sauce was uploaded to FunnyJunk^[2] on May 18th, 2013, garnering over 138 points in 10 years (shown below). On September 19th, 2014, the image was uploaded to Know Your Meme^[3] under the "reaction images" entry, garnering over 2,000 views in nine years.

Spread

The image continued to spread over the following years as both a reaction image and an exploitable format. On February 10th, 2017, Redditor u/ruthless-pragmatist posted a version of the meme to /r/BikiniBottomTwitter,^[4] garnering over 3,400 upvotes in six years (shown below, left). On November 8th, 2020, iFunny^[5] user retired posted a demotivational poster meme using the image, which was reposted by Instagram^[6] user alpha.coach on November 24th, 2022, garnering over 37,000 likes in seven months (shown below, right). On November 21st, 2021, the image was posted to Tumblr,^[11] garnering over 55,400 notes in two years.

On March 13th, 2023, Instagram^[7] user absolutenutcase162 posted a meme referencing Mild Bobby Sauce that garnered over 5,500 likes in three months (shown below).

On June 24th, 2023, TikToker^[8] @mildbobbysauce0 posted a slideshow consisting of three Mild Bobby Sauce images and an AI SpongeBob voice saying "Mild Bobby Sauce" repeatedly, garnering over 508,000 views in six days.

On June 29th, TikToker^[9][10] @mildbobbysauce._ began posting remixes of songs mixed with the audio clip. For example, on that day, the uploaded remixes of the songs "See You Again" by Tyler, the Creator and "Look Don't Touch" by Odetari and cade clair that garnered over 161,000 views and 235,000 views respectively in a day (shown below, left and right).
