About
God Has Given Us X is an exploitable image macro used in a series of memes in which users photoshop a graphic explaining why God gave people eyes, mouths, ears and hands, recaptioning or changing the original reasons to more comedic ones. The graphic was originally posted to Facebook in mid-2019 and became the subject of edits on Instagram and Tumblr in 2021, becoming further popularized in the following months.
Origin
On July 4th, 2019, Facebook[1] page Prayers to God posted a graphic, originally from a page titled Life Messages which appears to have been deleted, along with a quote explaining why God gave us eyes, mouths, ears and hands (shown below). The post gained over 9,600 shares and 1,700 reactions in four years and was reposted online numerous times, including by Facebook[2] page God Says in 2020, gaining over 55,000 shares and 12,000 reactions in three years.
The earliest known photoshop of the graphic was posted to Instagram[3] by park_slope_arsonist on June 7th, 2021. The photoshop changes the reasons why God gave humans each appendage into more comedic ones and gained over 5,400 likes in two years (shown below). The meme was posted by Tumblr[4] user mens-rights-activia the same day, garnering over 4,000 notes in the same span of time.
Spread
The meme spread over the following months as users photoshopped new reasons onto the graphic. On June 7th, 2021, Instagram[5] user meetmeintranspecos posted a version of the meme that garnered over 2,300 likes in two years (shown below, left). On June 15th, 2021, Tumblr[6] user awsugar posted a version of the meme that garnered over 290 notes in two years. On July 25th, Instagram[7] user butt_rats posted a version about breasts, which has become one of the most reposted and popular versions of the meme in the following months (shown below, right). Notably, it was reposted by Instagram[8] user imsowaved on September 5th, garnering over 250,000 likes in two years.
The meme remained popular throughout 2022. On January 3rd, 2022, Instagram[9] user kakyoin.the.rero.boy posted a version referencing JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, garnering over 19,600 likes in a year. On December 22nd, Instagram[10] user trashcanpaul reposted butt_rats version of the meme, garnering over 175,000 likes in two weeks.
