About

"Female-presenting Nipples" is a phrase used in Tumblr's updated community guidelines which ban adult content. Many took exception to the new guidelines, which states that "Adult content primarily includes photos, videos, and GIFs that show human genitals and 'female-presenting nipples'" and any visual content, including illustrations, that depict sex acts. The phrase "female-presenting nipples" was widely mocked on the website during the backlash against the new guidelines.

Origin

On December 3rd, 2018, Tumblr announced new community guidelines that would go into effect December 17th and which banned adult content. The new community guidelines regarding adult content read:[1]

Adult Content. Don't upload images, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples --this includes content that is so photorealistic that it could be mistaken for featuring real-life humans (nice try, though). Certain types of artistic, educational, newsworthy, or political content featuring nudity are fine. Don’t upload any content, including images, videos, GIFs, or illustrations, that depicts sex acts.

Spread

After the announcement of the guidelines, Tumblr users quickly took to mocking the phrase "female-presenting nipples." Many popular posts on Tumblr parodied Senator Amidala's line in Star Wars Episode III, "So this is how liberty dies: with thunderous applause." Popular parodies like this include a post by kixlepixel, which gained over 2,200 notes (shown below, left), and a post by supernovaodessa gained over 970 notes (shown below, right).

Others used object labeling memes to mock the announcement. User Restinpeas gained over 3,300 notes for their object labeling meme (shown below, left) and user gayglitterqueen gained over 2,700 notes for theirs (shown below, right).

ProZD mocked the move in a video parodying Tumblr, making the site appear as a character who desperately wanted to be out of business. The video, which heavily mocked the "female-presenting nipples" line, gained over 550,000 views in less than 24 hours (shown below).
