About
Chester The Otter is the Vtuber persona of streamer Kris Yim. After debuting in August of 2020, Chester grew exponentially in popularity as fans created fan art and memes about the character, leading to more widespread media coverage.
History
Kris Yim introduced Chester on his YouTube channel on August 30th, 2020 (shown below, left) and began streaming on Twitch. The character will appear in a film Yim is working on about Chester as a frat bro trying to fit in college.[6] Since Yim introduced Chester, they have streamed numerous games including Hades and Animal Crossing. However, Kris, as Chester, will often watch memes and chat with their audience.
Online Presence
Kris has relatively modest followings on YouTube[1] and Twitch,[2] with 1,300 and 9,100 subscribers on each channel, respectively. However, they have a much greater impact on Twitter, [3] where they've amassed over 29,000 followers. There, multiple clips from their streams have gained hundreds of thousands of views. For example, a clip of Kris as Chester accidentally saying Owo has gained over 118,000 views, 3,200 retweets, and 14,000 likes on the platform (shown below).

Furthermore, Chester has inspired a bevy of memes and fan art on the platform. For example, Twitter user @00yunje[4] posted art featuring the character that gained over 140 retweets and 1,300 likes (shown below, left). User @kagewolf1208[5] posted art that gained over 80 retweets and 700 likes (shown below, right).
Reputation
Chester's online profile was raised when it was profiled by Polygon[6] in February of 2021. In the piece, the site praised how Chester could fit in a Saturday morning cartoon. They wrote:
I can picture Chester on a kid’s show, even if the actual content of Yim’s streams may not be rated “E for Everyone.” For example, when Chester’s chat chants "maid Chester," the otter dutifully obliges and puts on the outfit. The chat can also do things like pet Chester’s head. It’s all in good fun and not at all sexualized, but it also highlights a curious dichotomy for the character. Chester is adorable and has a high-pitched voice, in the way Muppets do, but his backstory is a little more grown-up.
